Thanks for visiting my site.
Dear NavyDoc Saw this on Wayne's site! Thanks for submitting it Ron Thomas x-division 69/72
I was on the oriskany after the fire July 1968 - April 1970 I was in E div and worked in the lighing shop and battery locker
Linked here thru another site while reading up on the Oriskany. I was an AO-3 in VF-74 working on the flightdeck of the Forrestal when we had our fire 7/29/67.
Just found your site via Wayne's site,I'll bookmark it. Saint V-3 div. 67-68
I was browsing Google and came across your site from Life Magazie re: the Oriskany. I am the oldest son of Mel Berg and remembered that there was a feature in Life. Thank you for making it available. By the way my father is still living in El Cajon which is a few miles East of San Diego.
I served the USA, Army, in Vietnam, 1968, "THE year" of the war. I've seen it all. I know what combat is all about.... more than most people would believe.
Greate site. Thank you :)
I enjoyed your website very much. My father was a nuclear ordnance officer (Lt. Commander) on board the Oriskany in 1966 when the fire happend. I have many happy memories of waiting at the seawall at North Island for the Oriskany to dock and being aboard the ship with my father. He never spoke much about his career in the Navy. He was a Mustang. I do know however he really missed the 'Mighty O' after his retirement. Thank you and all the men who have served our Country when she has called. God Bless You. Kevin Asher
Hi. You have very nice website! Beautiful design.
Hey Doc, I know you from PSG forum. I'm also an Navy vet'81-84,OS3,"USS NITRO AE-23".
Thank you for being generous with your resources... I hope that you will receive more than you need for your time and energy. Keep at work!
Thank you, Doc, interesting website. That fire was brutal. These men were/are a prime example of "grace under fire," risking their own lives in extinguishing a fire that could eventually cost the lives of many more.
Very interesting to read how extraordinary bravery saved many lives and the boat!
Nice photos thanks. V-4 Div 60-65
Great Site- I served onboard 1969-1972- X-Division. Just got back from Pensacola and the Memorial Ceremony. Tommorrow-she goes down-if all goes well. Ron Thomas
I was an AE2 attached to VA-163 for the 66 and 67 WestPac cruises. Still remember the fire like yesterday; lost 2 good friends there. They sank her this morning, end of an era. RIP Big "O"
just doing some history research on the O since they turned her into a reef. Lot of good info here. Bravo Zulu ET1(SW)Harris, USN-RET
Hi Doc... thanks for your service!
In "R" division Appox. late 1961 thru eary 1965
Hi Gene! Nice page! Thanks so much! Ron Thomas Oriskany 69-72- X-Division
Great sight"
We chewed up some of the same water. I was on her 66-68. Thanks for the great site. Larry
I was aboard the "Mighty O" from Jan 1966 thru Jan 1968. I was the Disbursing Clerk responsible for the pay records for all the Officers. I will never forget holding a list of the deceased from the fire in one hand, pulling each one of their pay records, marking the top right hand corner "Deceased". I attended the Memorial Ceremony in Pensacola. Thanks for the great site.
Excellent website, will visit often to see updates. A real tribute to the "Mighty O".
Very impressive History for the Ship & Crew. I am always glad to see a piece of Military History remembered. This Country has been through a lot of very hard times as well as the Citizens and we can all thank the Service Members for this great Country. All Ships and Bases that were served on need to be remembered to keep the True History alive. Thank you for your Service to these United States.
Doc, good stuff. I worked in OC division, Air Ops. 1966-1968. I live in Washington State. I attended the Reefing. She (Oriskany) will always be in my heart. Thx Larry Gast 66-68
Very nice site you have here!
Great site!! Loved the Cruise book.
Hi, Very nice web site. Really enjoyed the videos you provided access to. Especially HUGGING THE DECK as it covered a lot of material about the Oriskany. I have an Oriskany website you may be interested in. Best wishes!
Larry's Oriskany website is listed on my links page...thanks Larry.
I was in boot camp in San Diego when Okriskany caught fire in October of 1966. After "A" school I caught the ship in the P.I. for my first WestPAC cruise. Very nice site you have.
I was aboard the Oriskany from 60 to 64. I was on the ships spray team. I had some real good times. I am glad she turned into a reef instead of of a scrap pile. Thanks
My brother was injured during the fire and I am trying to find out where he was division wise. I couldn't find him in the ship's company. I am a former HM1 and your site is very nice. Have you by chance maintained or reaquainted yourseld with any of the medical department that were there during the fire? Best regards, Tony moore
Excellent site. My father served aboard Oriskany from '62 - '66. I waited at the dock at North Island many a day.
WAS ON ORISKANY FROM 72-76. V-4 DIV. ABF-2
this is as good as it gets
Hello Shipmates. I served aboard the Oriskany from 1961 to 1964 in E-Div. We have a our own Reunion for E-Div. and we also attend the Annual Reunions. We have several people from E-Div. we have been trying to Low case the two that we are looking for right now are Craig Helm/mid 1960'E-Div. and Edward J. Alexander same time period. We believe Helm lives in southern CA. and Alexander somewhere in Allentown PA or that area. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone can give me any info about these two or one. I live in NE Ohio and I have hosted my own E-Div. reunion her in NE Ohio. I also was Friend of Richard Alberini who passed away. He owned the Alberini Restaurant in Niles Ohio and also Served aboard the Oriskany in the 1950's. Returning to Ohio to open his own business. Him and his wife Gilda attend the Reunions when ever they could. So if there is anyone out there from E-Div or any Div. that can help me get names and addresses or phone numbers for any E-Div. person from 1960 to 1967 it would be appreciated. Thank you. CARL A. BROWN USS Navy Ret.
I worked the reefing project in '04 here in my home town of Corpus christi. My dad Bob Richardson served onboard 65-67 as a SH3 in the Main Issue room. Daniel Richardson
Great web site. I am forwarding this to some sailors that served on her during the Korean War.
This site is most interesting.Sure took a lot of effort for all this info, Thanks
I also served in the 1966 cruise with VAW-11 Det Golf, I can be found in part 3, page 36 ( i m the one cleaning the wind shield, the one with the beard. I m also in part 5, page29, top line in the middle of the page, also with a beard ). Thanks, great time going through my memories.

Excellent work with this website, the video page was very interesting.
I served on the mighty O in 1974 ,thanks for the memories.
Just can't express what a good job you've done. Site is beautiful. Background image is very fitting. Thanks for all the love you've shown for the "Mighty O", & all her crew members. My DVD copies of 51,66 & 76 cruise books top quality in every way. Served aboard 1951, VF43 as an AD on flight deck. Bobby
They sank her
Just an ole Army Puke who spent most of the time jumping out of perfectly good aeroplanes, and building sand castles in SW Asia, the closest this troop ever got to a boat was loading/offloading our helos at the SPOD. The one value I feel we all share is the value of tradition. Those of us (unfortunately, a relatively dwindling number) who have had the privelege and honor of serving in uniform recognize this, be it ships at sea, or aircraft in battle...be it the Monitor and Merimack, or modern Naval Man-of-Wars, be it the Spads and B-17s of yesteryear, or the gun ships and slicks of more-recent encounters...while we honor and salute the machinery, let us not forget the men and women who operated and maintained the machinery, often under the most challenging conditions, where 18-to-20-somethings performed with honor and dignity, all-the-while scared poopless! I am sure we have roamed the museums repleat with the artifacts of human conflict, remembered and wept, and, walking away, felt such a fierce pride that, in some way, large or small, we were a part of it all. And so, to the men and women of Oriskany, I salute you!
Impressive site. Lot of hard work shows. All of the research displays an informative history and appreciation for an obviously dedicated crew of a great ship. The Might O has a well deserved place in American History. The ship, the crew, and all who appreciate the Mighty O are a compliment to the freedom we now enjoy. This site helps many to be reminded of the loyalty of the United States service men and women. Our Sailors and our Soldiers of all branches admire the sacrifices made by our fellow service personel. Thank-you.
Gene, I love your site! My favorite parts are the videos and the Cruise Books. It was a pleasure scanning the '72 and '74 books for your project. I hope everyone has a chance to enjoy them as much as I do.
The friend who told me about the site was you, Doc! Thanks, It is well worth visiting for it is well organized, interesting, and artistically pleasing to the eye.
I'm a planker and am glad the old girl is where she is. She's now creating life and giving enjoyment. She is now immortal. What more could any sailor ask for his ship. My chest puffs out with pride every time her name is mentioned.
My uncle was SN James Lee and was killed during the fire in 1966. I was an airdale with VA-52 onboard the Carl Vinson. My family has a long naval tradition from the Mighty "O", to naval intelligence, to troubleshooter on the flight deck. We are all very mpressed with your site. A fitting tribute to all who served onboard.
GOOD WORK GREAT SITE!!!!!!!!!!
Gene, I appreciate all the hard work you have put into this site and into the Cruise Book effort. I hope everyone that wants a copy of thier cruise books will get a chance to get one. I know first hand that they are worth every penny.
I would like to hear from anyone in V-4 Div. that was there for the 71-72 Westpac
i served aboard from 1960 to 1963 - would be nice to hear from anyone from that time - that was in 1st div. HJM
Would be happy to hear from radarmen who served aboard Big "O".
Interesting site in looking through the log book I see some shipmate's that I have come to know from attending the annual reunions of the Mighty "O"
I received my 1967 digital cruise book. It is great!!
A really well thought out web sight brings back some very fond memories. Would like to here from some of the "G" division shipmates thanks for the great site. You can bet the old girl is at peace now and still helping make new life at the bottom of the sea she served so well.
I really enjoyed this site. You have assembled a great collection of videos about Oriskany. Thank you, Steve Henry
In the beginning she was the "Big O". Sometime later she was referred to as the "Mighty O" and still later some even called her the "O Boat" which is a misnomer if there ever was one. I am now past 80 years of age but still remember and treasure my time aboard.
Your site is very useful.
It was great to see so much quality at your site. I ordered the ships log and thoroughly enjoyed the videos. I have the one year anniversary menu and the playbill when we had entertainment aboard while in the Med. Thanks for sharing . John
I was a Yeoman in VA-163 from late July 1963 until early in 1965 when I was transferred to VA-113 Det “Q”

Great Idea, Will be looking at and purchasing the CDs.
I am trying to find someone who knew my father. He served on this ship sometime in the early 60's. He died when I was just 2. His name is Richard Lee Fields. Please email me at tkchr32@yahoo.com I do not know much about him, he has a brother named James Fields aka Jim Fields.
Great job, well done!!!!!!!
Was having a conversation with a workmate who served on the USS Enterprise and looked her up via wickpedia. I decided to do the same for the Big "O", and made my way to this page. She was a good ship and I am proud to have been aboard.
THIS SITE BRINGS BACK GREAT MEMORIES OF AN EXCITING TIME IN HISTORY AND MY MATURING. THE NAVY AND ORISKANY DID ME A GREAT SERVICE AND I WOULD NEVER WISH TO HAVE MISSED A DAY OF IT. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE WORK YOU HAVE DONE.
I DONT KNOW IF YOU REMEMBER ME BUT I WAS IN THE DATA PROCESSING DEPARTMENT AND HELPED OUT IN THE DENTAL DEPARTMENT. I WAS TEMP TRANSFERRED TO YOUR DEPARTMENT TO HELP OUT WITH THE BODIES AFTER THE FIRE I ALSO HELPED OUT AS A DENTAL TECH FOR A WHILE WHEN YOU HAD ONE OF THE NEW GUYS KILLED IN A CAR ACCIDENT BACK IN THE STATES. HAVE YOU HAD ANY CONTACT WITH BRODIE OR ANY OF THE OTHER SHIPMATES ? MY CRUISE BOOK THAT COVERED THE FIRE WAS DESTROYED AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. DROP ME A LINE IF YOU GET A CHANCE. RTHURBER@NETZERO.COM
Gene You have done a marvelous job with a tremendous amount of work. I'm glad we have finally made contact, after 41 years. Jim Killinger
Dr. Killinger was the Dentist I worked for when I was stationed
on the Oriskany...it's great to be in contact with him again.
~Doc
This will be very interesting to able to see her in her glory.
Seeing the Discovery channel's documentary of the sinking brought a renewed interest in the old O boat. I guess Jean Dixon's prediction in the seventy's that the boat would sink finally came through.
Like to hear from fellow shipmates who served on the mighty o sametime as myself e-mail is gilbertjsanhez@msn.com
this is great - email-jelrod@neo.rr.com
Would like to find old buds that I served with on my four year tour on the Mighty O. I was in M divison and worked on the generator gang. Warren

'68 cruise book GM division was left out. A seperate photo was with the book. Did you get it for your digital scan?
Jan - Thanks for the info. I presume you are referring to the 1967 cruise
that ended in January of 1968. The person
that donated that book to my project did not include a separate page and the
Naval Historical Foundation does not have
a copy of that cruise book either. If anyone has this photo please contact me at
"admin at glewis dot us" and I will be glad to add
it to the Cruise Book.

Did you or anyone know CDR Clyde R. Welch NAVY ATTACK SQUADRON 164 (VA-164)? I would like to hear any stories. Thanks
Great site and information. Did you or anyone know CDR Clyde R. Welch NAVY ATTACK SQUADRON 164 (VA-164)? He was killed during "the fire". I would like to hear any stories. Thanks
There are a lot of former "O" Boat sailors around!
David...good to see a fellow DT drop by.
~Doc
Keep up the good work. You done an outstanding job with your web site. Will put you site in my favorites. A BIG THANK YOU for this, It bring back a lot of good time I had on the big "O"
Great website. Have you been able to compile a list of personnel that served during that period? At least, you know that I was one of the four (4) other Postal Clerks that processed your mail. Where were you when the fire started? I was at the mess hall and assigned to Damage Control Central. Those rations were bad. Thanks,
Gene, Jerry Schulte here, this is the best site I have seen. Just to let you know the, Herikmer Herald with the color cover, was my idea. THe other guys did not think we could do it, but it turned out great. Dan Dodge helped. Had to clean the press really good between color runs, but it worked. I will try to get the Mini DV's to you this week. You will like the return to San Francisco in '70. Plus the un-rep with the USS Sacremento. As you watch it, the guy on the Sacremento that is looking back at me, was from the same town of Dodge (pop 880) and lived 3 houses down the street. Harold Vlach, was his name, plus we ran into each other in Hong Kong one time. Small world. He displayed a sign with the number of days he had left, I didn't get that on film, but would have been great. Lot's of stories, like everyone else had. Some on Skunk Delta, planes crashing etc. All great memories. THANKS for a job "WELL DONE"!!

I appreciate what you are doing
I am looking for an AO who joined the Navy with me. His name is Jim Bohm and he served from 1903-1967. If you know his location, please contact me at ezrunner3@hot mail.com.
Correction, Jim Bohm served 1963-1967.
This website is wonderful---just another way to keep me "close" to my Dad(Jerry Turner) served aboard the Oriskany as a corpsman 1965-67, if memory serves me. He passed away in 2000, so he only got to enjoy websites about the Oriskany for a few years---but he always said, the CVA 34 was his favorite. I wonder if you knew each other?
I worked in the education and training office most of my time in Oriskany. I also stood watches in the combat information center while there was a shortage of radarmen. I still have my cruise books in excellent condition. thanks for the memories.
Came on board in August 1964 and left December 1966 I was sargent of the guard on the morning of October 26, 1966 and was making my rounds which took me through hanger bay #1 and down through officers quarters to "W" Div. As I was passing through the hanger bay all hell broke loose. Before I knew what was happening I was on the end of a fire hose and wearing an OBA. Captain Van Antwerp, my C.O. removed my loaded 45 from its holster and took it to safty and I didn't even know it. God bless all those men who died that day. They were heros to me!! Keep up the great work on this site. I purchase 2 cruise books and will probably buy more items.
My uncle Claude J Yarbrough was on the ship when the fire took place. We were talking about his military stuff and we found this site. It is great.
you are missing cruise book 3 the 1st korean cruise on guard is the 4th or second korean cruise

Bravo Zulu, you have done a fine job.
I was transferred off just prior to the fire. I was on an oiler back to Subic Bay. Went straight to the airport to catch a flight to Tokyo then on to Frisco before I was able to call my wife and let her know I was in transit home, and not onboard during the fire. wtodisman at aed dot cc. Thanks for the good work you have done for your mates.
Great Job. Thanks for all of your hard work. rich-judy@ameritech.net
Interesting finding all the website on the Mighty O
Look I've tried a lot of people, this is not about me, but rather my father(CHIEF AVIATION MACHINIST MATE PAUL RAYMOND CALTRIDER (RETIRED-DECEASED)B.MAY 3, 1923-D.MARCH 11,1983).He served aboard the Orisknay I believe from around late 40's to the mid 50's last aboard around 1957, this is only a guess, he was assigned to a photo squadron out of Miramar NAS, San Diego(1950-1957?),I have tried everywhere to get someone to help me get some information about my father's squadron, but to no avail I can't even get a reply,my dad was a good man and well liked by his sailors and officers, he didn't even get the military funeral he deserved, Ah well I guess it's the time we live in, he served his country with honor, he loved his service, his ship and his country, twenty odd years of good service and good conduct, anyway if can help I would appreciate it greatly, if no thank you for your time! Bob Caltrider Delta, Colorado oldhillbillypoet@hotmail.com
Bob...I will search the cruise books for the years you mention but without
knowing the squadron number, it will take some time...and no guarantee that I'll
find anything useful to you.
~Doc
VA 152 has an active re-union group. We saw your web site and I am sure that we will be purchasing some cruise books from you. I will check my books and see what I am missing. On my 66 cruise I had a molar worked on , the doctor must have worked on for an hour and then sent me back to work. After about an hour he sent for me and said that he found another tool that he could use to get the root out. He was never succesful, but he sure beat me up. After he gave up he committed me to sick bay and I spent the night there. He wanted me to go to an oral surgeon in the Phillipines when we pulled in and they recomended that I see one back in the States when we got back. I kind of forgot to go after we got back. Did you follow your training when you got out and become a Dentist? Tom
Tom...I was invited to the VA-152 reunion in Texas this year. Due to work,
I won't be able to attend but appreciate the invitation. Sorry to read about
your "oral adventure". I didn't go on to getting degreed in Dentistry but I did
work in the Dental field for twenty years after I got out of the Navy.

Hi Doc, You are one class act, I appreciate all of the help finding the Oriskany Documentary. It will make my step dad's birthday! Ken served on the Big O from '68-'70. I like the website. Jason
You did a great job on getting all the Cruise books together. Brings back some great memories of shipmates that I haven't seen since 1974!! My email address richardbrumley@msn.com.
Oriskany was my first duty station. I lived in the JO bunkroom, but left the ship before the fire. Can't help but wonder whether I would have been one of the casualties had I still been aboard.
Hi shipmate and friend. Site is great.
Thanks. My Dad, now deceased, flew with VF-192 during the On Guard cruise 1953-1954 in plane #213. I really enjoyed this sight and will return. Thanks again, Doug Parry Lt Loren C (Doc) Parry, USN Retired as a CDR in 1970 Deceased in 1979
Great Website
Great site, it takes me back. Thanks,
Served on board from May67-Dec70. Started out in v-4 worked on the flight deck and below decks. 69 transferred to Air Office and supply clerk for the Air Department under LCDR BRONSON Great site for the USS ORISKANY
Great site, I worked in the Captain's office and was on the ship baseball team. The JO's office was in our division. I have many photos of The O that are from the early 50's that may have never been released. I dig them out everynow and again to ponder the good times that were had on board. Contact me if you wish at egretsgt87atyagoodotcom.

Great sight brings back some very good memories and not so good ones. The squadrons enlisted Quarters was just forward of the penthouse above the fantail the 69 cruise was a wet one everytime it rained we new it my bunk was always wet. Since I was on the night shift 1800-0600 trying to sleep during the day was also pretty hot the chillers didn't work too well. but when they did, it was like a meat locker.
Catapults, on Board until decommissioning
This website is very nice to look at I enjoy it very much.
none
If there is anyone out there that was in the Photo Lab From 1960-1964 I would like to here from you. My E-Mail is BLMyers@tstonramp.com
Hi Doc, Outstanding Site, Haven't visited all the links yet but plan too. I did 5 years on the Flight Deck then went to Shore Duty in El Centro, Calif. When Chief Walters was sucked into the jet in-take I was just completeing my Shore Duty so came right back aboard in 65.Made the 65 and 66 cruise and was on the flt dk when the fire broke out. Was a long hard day, fire started at 6am and was finally under control around 5-6 that evening. I wish everyone in America could see the things I saw that day.As most rember , the smoke was so thick ON THE FLIGHT DECK that you could not see and hardly breathe, yet there were hundreds of young men trying to volunter to put on an OBA and go into the fire and try to rescue the men trapped inside. Most had little or no fire-fighting experience and were well aware that their lives would be ON THE LINE, but still they came forward. The Hanger deck was engulfed in flames with hundreds of bombs and dozens of planes loaded with thousands of gallons of high octane gasoline and when we needed help for the flight deck to go into that fire We had 10 times more men than we coul use. That kind of thing went on and on all day throught the ship. Although we lost many shipmates that day, we came very close to losing The Big "O" and the entire crew. The actions of those young men that day is what I saw and what I believe SAVED THE SHIP. They deserve much nore praise and credit than they ever received. Flight Deck Chief Gary Croft USN ret.
It was very sad when 152 got rid of the A1.
You have a great web site. barry.smith@mchsi.com
Excellent site. I have some photos you might be interested in. I can send a CD to?
John...sure, just send me an email and I'll see what I can do. Just click on

eddiek_19464atyahoodotcom My brother, LT jg James A.Kelly,Jr. was on board the "O" and killed in the 10/26/66 fire. It's been a long time since then, but our family still talks about "Tony" as if he were still alive !! Does anyone out there remember him ?
I wan't a qualified OOD at the time of the fire but I was on the Bridge just being relieved. Ended up staying there until about 16:00 helping with radio communications to assisting ships. Lost 2 good petty officers from my division (2nd) and lots of good friends. It was certainly a life altering event! A big date for me was May 16 of 2007 which was the 1 year anniversary of the reefing. I went back to the bridge as a diver and toured much of the island down to the flight deck. MBT Divers is a great bunch of people - dive with them if you ever get the chance! Regards, Thom
My brother, Walter Szwenik, was stationed on the Mighty O in the 60's (will pin down exact years as I was a pre-teen at the time). I found your website most fascinating and am going to try and get my brother (who isn't too computer savvy) hooked up! I think he'll love it!
MY DAD SERVED PROUDLY AS A MAINTENANCE CHIEF WITH VF-162, THE HUNTERS. I HAVE VISITED THE MUSEUM DEDICATED TO THE ORISKANY IN NEW YORK AND LEFT SOME LOG BOOKS AND OTHER DOCUMENTS THAT ARE NOW ON DISPLAY. THE LOG BOOKS CONTAIN DAILEY FLIGHT OPERATIONS OF THE SQUADRON AND ORIGINAL FLIGHT ORDERS WITH PILOTS NAMES AND THEIR MISSIONS. GO SEE THIS MUSEUM WHEN YOU'VE THE CHANCE. THANKS YOU MIKE HICKS mvhicks1@yahoo.com
My dad was on the Oriskany in 1969, (I believe), and I've always had an interest in ht ship. I love your site! rshomo at hflenz dot com

I was looking for a Christmas present for my dad- aboard for the 1960 Cruise. I was so happy to see the Cruise Books available. I know he will love it!
Great thing and I know its a lot of work, Harold E. Smith onetarpon@yahoo.com 50-52
Good-looking website - keep upo the good work!
I was thrilled when I found this webpage. I have a friend who served aboard the USSOriskany in 1960. I had the honor of being with him to visit the USSOriskany Museum in Oriskany NY, where he found his cruise book and we found his picture. He was a young 18 year old. He told me that at some point he had lost his cruise books, seeing them and his old shipmates brought back many memeories for him. Through this webpage I was able to purchase his cruise books to give him for Christmas. Thank you for making it possible.
Interesting information
Interesting information. I served on the Oriskany and worked in the print shop. Had some good Navy friends and also knew many of the Marines.Would enjoy hearing from them. emailme at:gjones1@neo.rr.com
My Father, Noel V. Hartford served on the USS Oriskany during the 1966 & 1967 cruises. He was aboard the ship during the fire and was mentioned in the Life Magazine, Reader's Digest, and All Hands Magazine articles about the fire. He was called "one of the outstanding heroes" during the fire and was decorated with the Navy & Marine Corps Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal for his actions during the fire. Dad retired in 1974 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. Sadly, Dad passed away in December, 2003 Mom (Twila)and Dad were married for 52 years, and Mom still lives here in Grants Pass, Oregon and will turn 79 on Wednesday, November 26th. We plan to go to Florida during the Summer of 2009 to have a wreath placed on the "O-Boat" as well as having Dad's dog tags dropped down the funnel. God Bless to all of you who served. Sam Hartford

Even though I was from the east, I was sent to San Diego boot camp September 15 - December of 1963... because there was a meningitis outbreak at Great Lakes???
Is this what they tell all the recruits?
Andy...I joined Jul 11, 1963 and am (was) from So. California. I went to Great Lakes
for boot camp because...you guessed it, San Diego was closed due to an outbreak
of Spinal Meningitis.

For those on the ship that year, I was working on the hanger bay on the tail of an F8 when a plane about 200ft forward had a malfunction while working its 20mm guns. I was shot by a 20mm round and spent 45 days at clark AFB hospital . This round went through my left arm then passed through my forearm of my right arm.I guess I am lucky that it did not hit my body. This hapened around april of 65.My best regards to all who were on the that cruise at that time.email add.j.federico @ cox.net
Great Website. I appreciate your expertise as well as your obviously being a very loyal crew member. I know the Mighty "O" is not razorblades ,but I sure hate to think of her in the bottom of the ocean. My e-mail headrick1@sbcglobal.net i love your website and plan on ordering cruise books. I do have a live video of flight ops as well as the aftermath of a either cold shot or pilot error. Thanks jh
Very Good! I was onboard during the fire also.

The three years on the O boat was some of the best times I ever had. ferrro885@msn.com
From post on Shipmodel forum. Did not serve on Oriskany, served on ESSEX CVS 9. I can't get enough info or pics of US carriers. Your site is great. Wish I was able to do something like that with the ESSEX pics I have. Keep up the good work. EJ
Now that I know this exists...I'll make use of it! Thank you for making this site. If you knew me during my Navy days, please e-mail me at...........FactryRatt@aol.com
I was aboard when we went around the Horn, and I know some of the officers took pictures of the storm we went through, is there a CD of that cruise from Brooklyn to San Diego?
...George, the 1952 cruise book on CD I offer documents the cruise from
Brooklyn to S. D with a few photos of going around the Horn.

Outstanding site. Love everything I saw so far. Ordered 3 cruise books. Thnaks for everyting you have done.
Looking for PAO Journalists and officers from 68-December 70. If you remember Jim Crowser. the guy who did the unofficial hiarcuts, he is still in Sturgis, SD and in need of support and encouragement. You can call Crowser at directory assistance and get his son who will hook you up with his dad.
Great job on your website. I enjoy surfing the net for info about the Oriskany.I am especially interested in the cruisebooks on cd. plan on ordering a few of them.
Was doing reserch on my dad "Larry Z. Neff" when I came across web site. Although he served on three carriers the Mighty "O" was the one he spoke of the most. Thank you for taking the time to create this sight for it is making my task easier. I would like to ask if there is anyone whom might remember my dad to please contact me via e-mail sell2buy@aol.com thanks again. Danny neff (USS Bunker Hill CG-52 91-93)
The Lady gave me some of my best years, I'm glade she will always be remembered in a special way.
Excellent Website: Was sent to me by the son of former shipmate, Doug Penner. Doug was a 4th Division Gunners Mate. The other website contain the memorbilia you purchased from Capt. John's estate. It is an outstanding collection. Doug and I and our sons had the privilege of working with Capt. John during the artifact recovery operation in Vallejo in the 1990s. We spent 6 days on the ship and it was great to wander through the compartments and share sea stories with our boys. We were all impressed with Capt. John and treasure our memories of the time spent with him and the others.
My brother was on this ship.
My father proudly served aboard this great ship. He was onboard the ship when it cruised around Cape Horn. Great site, a tribute to the brave men who served their country aboard her.

Great web site. It was nice reminiscing about the Big "O"
Thanks for your efforts to remember a Great Lady. Lew
Videos don't work for, but would love to see them. I think the f9f was the prettiest thing ever put on wings.
GREAT!!! BEEN LOOKING FOR CRUISE BOOKS SINCE MY HOUSE CAUGHT FIRE IN 1970.
I worked in the lighting shop and flight deck lighting, '68-'71.
found this looking for a model of the 'O'. 1966 was a bad luck cruise for me. I was blown overboard by jet blast two weeks before the fire. Fortunately for me I was a strong swimmer and was rescued and didn't suffer any serious injury.
I snaped pictures of the Lady when she got to Teaxs all the way down to Beaumont. Looking for James Edward Wolfe and Jeff Mosely.
My dad was on the ship have pictures to show you not sure what year he was on it, maybe you could help me tell Jennifer Reed. Please respond
I was on board from May 1954until Nov. 1956 and was transfered to the Shangri La as we were in Hunters Point for conversion and The Shangri La needed a gyro technicion.
Nice job on the model
Your site is excellent, you have done yourself proud. I am just back from the 2009 USS Oriskany OE Division reunion, and it was a fine get-together. We're aging gracefully.
sure do miss the mighty ''o''
Interested in locating shipmates from 1960-64.
I am interested in purchasing a cruise book for 61-62 Westpac cruise. Any ideas would be appreciated. THANKS
Went to Re-union in San Antonio, Tx., years ago, had a great time. I would like to contact some of my old shipmates. S-4 Division.
You've done a fantastic job with this website.
Great site.
Glad I found this site. I was onboard the Oriskany from Jan 1966 to Jan 1967. Never got the cruise book. Looking forward to getting the CD.
Well done website. As you know i'm building a 1/350 Oriskany hull for a friend. I will tell him to look at your website to get info. Again well done. mardis hall aka gtb-red

Was fly 3 petty officer from 1968-thru dec.1970 enjoyed my time aboard the "O" boat, would like to hear from any shipmates from that time. Really enjoyed your website. Thanks Donald E Davis/ "BIG BEAR"
My old nick name was Seadog
Doc, Your site keeps getting better and better. Thank You for all the hard work you put into keeping it going.
I was aboard the U.S.S. Bryce Canyon (AD-36), the tender that affected repairs on the Oriskany at Cubi Point, Subic Bay in October of 1966. It is disappointing and disrespectful that no mention is made in ANY of the articles re: the Bryce Canyon's work and effort on Oriskany, not even from crew members of the Oriskany. My Bryce Canyon Cruise book contains photos testifying to our efforts.
Bruce...It may be disappointing to you, but hardly disrespectful or
intentional, that there
are no articles here regarding the USS Bryce Canyon's role in support of the
Oriskany after the fire. I'm also sure no disrespect has been intended by any
former crewmember by failing to mention the Bryce Canyon at this website.
It would have served you better if you had contacted me by email with
information, articles or photos of Bryce Canyon's efforts. I would gladly host
them here for you. I will still gladly do that of course...all you had to do is
ask. Drop me an email if you'd like.

Hi Doc, This is not a forum-since we have another page for that. I'm responding to: Mr. Bruce A. Campbell's post. I signed your guestbook when it first came out, and this is the first negative comment I've seen. Doc, I agree with your assessment. Perhaps Mr. Campbell, instead of making the statements he did, would have been better served by offering his photos, and his stories about his ships efforts to repair Oriskany, instead of making his baseless statements about the lack thereof. It would be interesting to have those kinds of photos and stories added to the web page, which I know Doc you would gladly post. By the way Mr. Campbell, Doc, was onboard during that terrible fire and knows first hand what happened on that fateful day. His page honors that day in several ways. Ron Thomas YN3- X Division USS Oriskany 1969-1972
I am searching for some of my ship mates. Would like to hear from anyone onboard during that period of time.
GREAT WORK
Did not serve aboard, but did work on her. Good ship, great crews.
Your description of the 1965 Cruisebook is inaccurate. Commander Stockdale was CAG 16 not the CO of VA163 Saints. The CO was Commander Harry Jenkins who was also shot down and a POW. I knew them both as I was a plane captain for the Saints and strapped them both in at times before their shoot downs. Regards. Bill Tomko
Bill...Thanks for pointing out my error. You are right of course, that Cmdr
Stockdale was C.O. of Carrier Air Wing 16. I've made the correction in the
cruise book description.

Served aboard the Big "O" from 1962 - 1964. We were tied up in Yokosuka when JFK was killed. I worked in the engine shop in VA 165, Douglas Skyraiders; later as a Flight Deck Trouble Shooter. I have hours of 8mm movies I took aboard ship and ashore on liberty. Many fond memories of the Oriskany!
I boarded her in San Diego, right after AO 'A' school in Jacksonville, Florida, President Kennedy had just finished his visit. I was assigned to the bomb elevator crew, my main assignment was the elevator right next to the bakery, used for bombs, food supplies, & garbage :) i was later assigned to a special crew, fixing bomb skids, belting 20mm, assembling & filling fire bombs, & magnesium para flare storage on the hanger deck level, this crew & several others were also involved with all the unreps, fuel, food, & as well as ammo, it was just after one of the ammo replenishments that my hand was caught between the base of the 1000 pounder, that i was pushing, & the nose of another one that my friend was pushing, the cast was an inconvience, but luckily my hand healed . i left the Big O when we tied up at Subic Bay that september
& most of you know what happened next. I went to the Oriskany Museum in August
of this year & had a pleasant talk with the Lady in charge of it, she informed
me about this website & a couple of the others. a short history of that cruise
can be found at the jackfeldhaus website.
thank you for taking the time to research & set up this web page, it has brought back memories of good times, & i have seen some names of friends that i spent Liberty with :)
Tom...thanks for your comments. I'm sorry but I can't link directly to files
on someone else's website without their permission. I will add a link to the
jackfeldhaus USS Oriskany webpage on my "Links" page which is something I should
have done a long time ago.

I'm so happy that I was finally able to find a place to get my missing cruise book. I married my wonderful wife of 33 years while stationed on board the Oriskany and we have been wondering what has happened to all my friends in V-2 Div Arresting Gear. It will be nice to see them again if only in pictures. The O-Boat will always be my favorite ship that I served on.
Great! Glad to see someone has done this. I'll be ordering mine, soon. Thanks, Ronnie
I am researching my uncle John. He came out of Vietnam with post dramatic stress. He passed away when I was five years old. It has affected my relation/understanding of how to deal with military in general. I have several pictures and his honorable discharge from Captain J.E. Kennedy. He described the fire that happened and told me how the men who passed he had been through bootcamp with etc. He was 6'4'' 350 lbs at discharge and died at over 500 lbs. in 1976. I remember a great uncle who was compasionate and understanding. He would wake up from his sleep screaming at times and it deteared me from ever wanting to join the military. My grandfather was also military WWII ran the Vfw in DeKalb and did my uncles eulogy when he put him in the ground. I would like to put together some of the patches and such memorabilia I see on your sight in a rememberance collage. I named my son after him and have such a pride to what he represented. Thank you for considering response to me. My name is Steven Michael Anderson @ 1716 N. 73rd ct. Elmwood Park,Illinois 60707 and can be e-mailed at the sight mentioned. God Bless with my deepest respects.
Excellent web site. A real resource to veterans and their families. Father Frank Franciscan Friars 1289 South Mayfair Avenue Daly City, CA 94015-3655 (650) 756-4949 (h); (925) 680-4526 (Concord Vet Center - part of the VA's Readjustment Counseling Service's community-based centers.)
Electrician Mate. On board during that horrible fire. Really appreciate you site. Hope a whole bunch more of the electricians and machinist mates drop a line, especially those serving from 1964 through June 1967.
Looks like we were on at the same time. I dont recall getting dental work then. Pretty fun to look at all the stuff on the internet for the Oriskany. Brings back fond memories. I am still in contact with 3 or 4 guys from the shop.
Great job, your patience, your will, and your desire to finish the model really had to be tested. it looks great. thanks shipmate for a great website
Enjoyed your website. Sorry can't make reunion. Would like info on getting a copy of the 1966 cruise book. My tour with the Oriskany ended in September 1966.
You did an outstanding job of getting this together! Brings back some very good memories of the Mity "O" and my shipmates. Thanks for the memories.
As the daughter of a proud WWII Navy man, I appreciate and enjoy any and all information regarding this branch of the service, and commend you for your efforts in keeping the memory of the "MIGHTY O" alive!!! MAY GOD BLESS ALL THAT STAND FOR FREEDOM - HERE AND ON FOREIGN SOIL - AND KEEP US SAFE! GOD BLESS AMERICA!
I was on a firehose the morning of the fire and your article brought back memories, both good and bad, but it also reinforced my pride in the guys that I had the honor to work and live with. We were the V-3 "animals" and could do so much for so long with so little because "WE COULD HACK IT! "Thanks Gene, I'll be back to show family and friends. HOO YAH!
Now that i am not on the ship I can say i love ever minute even the bad times
Great job!
I bought two cruise books to help with VA claim. Many Thanks
I had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled during a typhoon on the USS Bon Homme Richard. We were on station in the Gulf at the same time as the Oriskany and I have photos of the two carriers together at sea. http://www.flickr.com/photos/10243214@N07/4082587814/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/10243214@N07/4081826325/

hands when he did those extractions during the typhoon.

Hello, I have enjoyed visiting your website very much. My dad proudly served aboard the Oriskany during the Korean War and has never forgotten. I've been looking for articles to add into a photo album I'm making for his Christmas present. Your website is wonderful and next time I'm down home in the country visiting my dad, I'll be sure to show him your website. I'm sure he'll love it. As an Air Force wife for 24 years, I can appreicate all the time it took you to put this together. Thank you, Janet Pecorella Gene Worthington's daughter
My father, Will Williams, was onboard during the 1966 fire. He is a doctor and retired after 34 years in the Navy in 1994. I've always enjoyed hearing his stories of that day. Thank you for taking the time to put all of this together. It's great to know that this history won't die away!
Very nice website. Ordered CD on 1966 cruise, have book but thought CD would be a nice addition. Looking for other HC-1 members from same cruise. Wayne Sargent
Wayne...Your cruise book CD goes in the mail today (11/16). By having the
CD, you'll keep your original clean and safe.

Gene:
Thanks for the memories in pictures. Can you help me find a Boatswains Mate SA or SN that was electrocuted to death while docked in Alameda or Hunters Point? I believe it happened in late 1971 or early 1972 while I was working with him. He grabbed a 440 volt cable that had exposed wire. There was nothing I could do to save him. It happened so quickly. I buried my thoughts of him and even his name which I thought was Phillips or Peterson. I thought he was in Deck, Division 3, but he is pictured in the cruise book for 1972 and is not listed in the "In Memory Of page". This casualty was documented by the Ship's Safety Officer. Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated.
Best regards,

Long live "The Great Carrier Reef"
It is with sadness I remember the fire and seeing the O-Boat sunk as a reef. There are however, many fond memories I have of those years.
I worked the Ships Store and have many fond memories of my shipmates and places we visited during our tours. These memories will last forever. Thanks for the great website.
I was looking to see if you needed Cruise books for 1966 and/or 1967.
Thanks for the offer Andy, I now have the full set.

Appreciate that you have set up this website. Haven't had time to look at everything but think it's great that you have done this. Gene
Great website. Loved the story of the Oriskany since reading "Over the Beach".
great site thaank you
A very good site, I was only aboard her during her last overhaul in Long Beach, I must have moved 20 tons of boilers brick down through her bottom and by crane out of the drydock, I never had a more true sense of sized until I stood at the point of her bow and leaned backwards to see her hurricane blocking out the sun above, I was only with her a short time but the old relic is still dear to my heart, keep up the great work, Tim Wiley, #2 Fireroom.
I would like to advise all shipmates that there will be a gathering at Orikany NY the third week in Sept 2010.The purpose is to have one last gettogether and honor our plankowners and to thank the folks in Oriskany for the support they have given us through the years. Remember, it is the 60th aniversary and a lot of our shipmates are in their 80!s and find it to hard to travel. Hotel info to follow, any questions contact me at pcatalano2@aol or 843 849 1743.
Worked in Main Control
I am trying to find more information about the Oriskany as I prepare to bury my brother Bill (above). Bill died Jan 27 2010. He served during the time of the fire and was a fire control technician. He narrowly missed being in his area at the time of the fire. I clearly remember the days of the fire and not knowing how anyone was. I surely hope he found you while he was still alive. He was 64 yrs and 11 mo at his death. Thanks for your website - it is very helpful.
My condolences on your brothers passing. It's a sobering thought that your
brother was only two months older than I. I'm glad to read you found my site to
be helpful.
~Doc
I have many memories of my time aboard the Big O. I was a Commisary Storekeeper and was responsiable for all dry goods. The heat was unbearable as we had to carry everything to the main mess decks by hand. One on my best friends contacted me 30 years after our discharge. Hi name is Jim Baker and was a printer and is still in the printing business today. I was let off the ship in Aug. 2 months before the big fire. I knew two of the sailors who lost there lives during that terriable event.
Great site brings back A lot of memories
My Dad, Ltjg Michael G. Kane, served aboard the "O" in 1956. He enlisted in Jan 42 and passed away in July 1959 at the age of 35. I was only 10 years old. He was a graduate of the NAP program in Pensacola. This website has been a wonderful find for me. Thank you. Dennis
Proudly served 70-74, SF2 3 Wes-Pacs. Some really good times and some really hard times. Lots of good friends made that I still wonder about to this day. Dan Stangl
Good Site I am sorry I missed the sinking but at the time I was still working for a living.
Found memories of my time on the Oriskany. This web site and others bring them back. I watched the special on TV when the Mighty "O" was buried at sea. I also had a chance to see her one last time at Bremerton where she was berthed after decommissioning.
You have done a great job with this site. I retired in 1975 as a MCPO and have used sites like this to find old ship mates. I don’t think we will ever have a civilian friend as close as those we call “shipmate”. Keep up the good work, Dave Cox
Thank you for your website. Brings back a lot of memories aboard the Mighty "O". I never bought cruise books, but intend to buy the 1972 & 1974 editions.
interesting to relive and think of the past good job will be back
I did not serve on Oriskany but I served aboard USS ESSEX CVS-9, but I love carriers and collect Carrier pictures and build carrier models. EJ
My dad was on the USS Oriskany during the fire. I never knew about it until he was Diagnosed with cancer and felt it was linked to his duty on the Big O. The cancer took him very quickly and left us with many questions. Anyone have any information?
I loved serving aboard the "Mighty O". I was at the sinking and had the honor of "Piping" her down.
The Schulte films are astonishing. I had tears today watching that magnificent ship sail into San Francisco, as I was standing on the deck looking at what Jerry was filming. I never knew him, but he must have been near the bow, as I was aft of the island. The launch and recovery films amazed me too, as I have identical films that I shot from the island structure that year. The only thing in Jerry's film and not in mine...is me! I was the yellow shirt cat spotter on the port sid, the last yellowshirt in tlin to actually guide the nose bar on to the catapult block. At one point, Jerry zoomed in on me briefly, and it was wierd to see me, there again, after 40 years. The music, especially for the homecoming in December 1970, was extraordinary. Thank yu both for sharing these amazing films with the world, and especially old salts like me who were there, and still can go back now. George Murphy
I appreciate you putting this together. It was a hard job. Thanks again!
It just keeps getting better and better. Thank you for all your hard work. It was nice to hear from Mr. Murphy regarding seeing himself in the movies. GREAT JOB!!
Nice job. I am researching possible "Operation Shad" participation, ionization exposure and/or agent orange exposure ship activities related to this period for my VA background. I was released May 16, 1966 just prior to the fire. I have been finally accepted for VA Med for service aboard during this period. That was what brought me to your site.
Just had to view it one more time and sign it again, and thank you for all your work you have done to keep what I call a great piece of history in my lifetime and others alive. Thank You very much Gene, God Bless and Stay Well, if your ever in NJ look me up, in two (2)years I hope I will be in Arizona with the grand children. Respectfully Yours, Pete Catania
Served in V-4 fuel Div. and ran the av-gas pump room. Fond memories.
nice work, fun site, never got my cruise book for '74 so will order one i was t.a.d.'d to ship's laundry(2 mos) and galley (3 mos) and flight deck va-155's line div. as plane captain for 72-3 cruise, then into va-155's avionics shop as a.t.3, avionics flight deck troubleshooter in 74, and t.a.d.'d to nas cubi pt as a.t. shop tech (3 mos)- still in touch with several ol' shipmates via internet - keep up your labor of love! thanks, tf
I produced the Herkimer Herald on the 1969 cruise. The picture of the guy on the cover (blue) kissing the girl is me and my girl friend Bonnie. I also did the morning show on KRIS radio. Played lots of country. I published the Morning Musket on the 1970 cruise. Anybody having a copy of the Moaning Muskrat, the last paper put out on returning to the states, December 1970 I would love to get a copy by e-mail. Thanks Jon Erickson
My first Duty station after boot camp. Came aboard just as they were finishing fixing up after the fire.
Very nicely done!I'm sure that I join many in saying thank you!
Good Site
Great site, thanks for your efforts.
Was looking through ship model kits and just googled USS Oriskany. Was very interested in the past history information and the pictures of the Marine.
is there a number I can call to purchase 1969 cruse book over the phone? I would like to get in touch with old shipmates but can not remember their correct names just names like pappy ect. If anyone out there is from the Med unit 1969 please contact Ret Maj Allan Clevenger via email @ coot46@hotmail.com. thanks Allan
This web site is outstanding. I was on the flight deck of the Oriskany when the fire broke out, it was horrendous. I was in the arresting gear at the time. I am grateful I came across this site, it brought back a lot of memories.
SO FAR SO GOOD
Hi, i was signalman aboard the Mighty "O" boat and remember the day we had the fire.I look back on my time and service with pride. Its too bad they did not look at our service and sacrifice the way they do today.I loved the big "O" and always will. M.L.Cone
I was a member of the recommissioning crew. Took the mighty 'O' from Hunters Point shipyard to North Island and 6 months of shakedown trials.
I'm currently building the Revell kit you did with a major overhaul to make it more accurate of the ship from 1966-1968. Why won't the resin Island from "Starfighter Decals" work with the kit? Your build progress is a nice encyclopedia of the progress. Good job!
Finally found one of the crew that I served with. Good to see you-all are still around after all these years. Good site.
I watched the video of the 66 fire. Brought back memories. I was on Repair 5 Bravo during fire.
Great site
Lieutenant Commander Omar Ray Ford was my uncle. He passed before I could meet him. God Bless you Omar. 03 April 1934 - 26 October 1966.
served as signalman from 1964 to 1967.
I had a wisdom tooth removed in early 1966, you may have helped with the extraction!
spent some good and bad times on the o.worked in #i engine rm.
Hey, I am building 4 Revell survivors of the Essex class, as well as the Intrepid in 1/96. You did a 4.0 job on the Oriskany! What colors did you use for the deck, sides. I know the non-skid is black or gunmetal. I have been using intermediate blue for the deck and neutral gray for sides. Francine
Francine~ These are the two shades of gray I used. The lighter color is
for the hull/island and the darker gray I used for the flight deck/regular
decking...Good luck on your model builds.

I enjoyed your site.! Thanks

I enjoyed your web site and all the info very much. My wufe and I plan to attend the 2010 reunion in Lafayette, LA. I have some videos that I will try to put on DVD and send to you.

I enjoyed this site very much. It sure brought back some good memories of very similar experiences. Thank you for taking the time to create this site.
Your website reminds us nice memories. Good job!
A great site, thanks for all your hard work.
I was one of many aboard the ship that were firefighters. At first all of us thought this was a drill & then all hell broke loose. No one knows but the ones that were there the fear of the unknown and unable to see, trying to fight a fire down below and hearing all those men crying out for help.Shortly thereafter the USS Forrestal caught fire and waiting to go aboard brought all that fear back. All of us that survived are still having problems with all those flashbacks at night and smells of flesh burning. This is something that has been with me from that date to this and can not get rid of this fear or nightmares. Thanks for keeping this information for others to see the Mighty O and all those men that flew those flights that night and lost their lifes.
Great Sight glad i stopped by those were some of the best times of my life
My father was on this ship and I was looking for possible photo's of him. His name is Albert S. Bennett. His Birthdate is 8/13/1936. He retired in Norfolk and is still alive. I have no pict's of him as he lost all that he had. If you have some, could you please send them to me at my email?? rfry20002000@yahoo.com...........I would appreciate it very much. Thank You, Rita Fry:)
I also have several home movies that my father gave me. A lot of close ups along with burials at sea. By the way, my father was a chef. I also have lot's of pict's of the ship and it's men....
Many long cruises with short turn arounds were the order of the day during the years I served on board as the Fire Marshal. The proudest moment ever was the day on Yankee Station in October of 73, we just pounded North Vietnam to a truce and all the big decks, small boys and our air wings over flew the CTF 77 steaming in formation down Yankee Station. man, what an awesome display of power.
Would like to hear from WO. C. C. Schwartz, D.G. Barbour, J. A Conlin, L. J. Connell, G. R. Guzman, B. M. Joco, N M. Kauhane, A. E. Mathis and R. L. Stillwagon. It's been a long time.... AKC, Retired.
anyone on board from 1970-72?
Hi. My name is Victoria Davis; my husband’s name is Robert William Davis. He was an enlisted serviceman on the Oriskany from February 1969 through December 1972. He now is disabled and needs help to prove his condition is service connected. It is our understanding that, since his personnel records are terribly incomplete, and all he needs to prove the service connection is to show he set foot in Viet Nam, for as small a period of time as 5 minutes, we can use what they call “buddy statements” to prove this. If you knew my husband, it would be absolutely wonderful hearing from you, in addition to the fact we desperately need your help to supply a statement of the path of his discharge. If you did not know him, but served on the Oriskany at the same time, you were no doubt discharged from there following the same path. I think if we can get statements of veterans who followed the same travel path he did, that would be good enough. Basically, from the ship he was flown into Viet Nam. He stayed there for the afternoon, then was transported to the Phillipines, and from there, to San Francisco then to his home town of Boise, Idaho. If you knew him, or followed a similar travel path on your discharge, and, even better if you have any documentation that backs this up, I would so appreciate hearing from you. Even without documentation, if you followed that travel path, or can attest to the fact that soldiers you knew of followed it, please, please contact me. Either way, let me say, as an American, I very much appreciate your service to our country, and honor you. Thank you. Victoria Davis. Ladyesq6@aol.com
What an experience!

Oriskany was the first of several aircraft carriers I was privileged to serve during my 21 year career. She was my first at-sea duty station. I have many fond memories of my two deployments on her. I made many friends from the shipmates onboard during that time. I have some memorabilia that I will share (pictures) and forward to the museum in New York. It's neat to have a place like this to revisit memories of my youth.
I'm not connected with the Oriskany Museum, this is my personal website, but
if you'd like to share your pictures here too, I'd be happy to set up a Gallery
page for you. Just drop me an email.

Hello, I am the #3 daughter of Lt. Cdr. Rodney Balaam Carter, who was a pilot, stationed aboard the Oriskany, and was one of the 43 men who died in the fire. Thank you so very much for your thoughtful compilation of the history of 'The Big O', and of the events of October 26th. I am finally able to feel what my dad and so many other men went through while trying to survive. I hope to visit the Oriskany Reef this year! Take care.
Looking for someone who may have a copy of the 1962 or 1964 Cruise Book with me in it. My company wants to honor us veterans.
I was onboard these years as the Squadron corpsman and also when the fire broke out aboard the Forrestal, I went aboard to help out there.
Hi, I now live in Eugene, Oregon. I am sorry I missed the last reunion, it was close! Maybe next time. Any photographer's Mates out there who was in the photo lab with me from 61 to 62? Cliff Coles 583 Dean AV Eugene, OR 97404 541-870-3032
As part of the Fire crew that helped with the dismantling and final sinking of this ship i found this site facinating I do have some pictures of the dismantling if you are interested
I was just looking around the web and was surprised to find this, particularly the posts from Bill (Beatle) Bailey. We were neighbors, friends, and shipmates. We would keep each other out of trouble (both married) while on liberty. I'm anxious to get logged in to communicate with him.
I was on board when the fire broke out. Looking for buddies
VA 163 was a great squadron in which to serve. We were a team and proved we could be successful in the worst of conditions. Fires, typhoons, bad weather, we withstood it all. Thanks to all the ships company and the other squadrons, Oriskany set some great records and demonstrated what could be done when all pulled together.
she was my first of 3 ships fresh out of boot i will never forget how big she look to me it was almost scary may she sail on forever.
Excellent site, almost brought tears to my eyes...
I have tried finding old ship mates
I am on a mission to try to find the family of Norman Levy,LCDR,who died in that fire.I loved his dad and last I heard-He never saw his grandchildren, because Norman's wife had run away when he was at sea.I don't know if they know who their dad was or that he was a hero.I've been on this quest for many years.
Thank You for this great service to our shipmates.
I retired in 1974 at NAS Alameda, ACCS USN. She was home ported in Alameda. I am fully retired in Pensacola, FL. She is under the waves in the Gulf of Mexico twenty some miles off NAS Pensacola.

Can't believe almost 40 year's ago, boarded the USS Oriskany, in Alameda, California, and spent over 3 year's aboard her. I was a Radioman, and would like to comunicate with some old friends and see how they r doing.
Looking at these sites brings back the long dormant memories of being underway and serving in a war-time situation. I did 3 40 day 'on line' gulf of tonkin runs. The ship went into dry dock early in 68, and was in sea trials when I was ordered to In country duty in Vietnam. I was the message carrier most of my sea time. I carried an aluminum notebook full of the latest copies of classified messages to every department of the ship several times a day from the radio shak. As a result, I probably knew the ship better than allmost anyone on board. From the bridges to the hot hell hole 8 and 9 levels below decks. I cherish my service now...allthough, at the time I cannot say that I did. I spearheaded a project to make a huge banner that we snuck up on the highest level of the superstructure to display upon our return to homeport on Jan. 31, 1968 that said in three foot high letters "make Love not war". I can't believe we got away with it! It made the papers! I take comfort in knowing our old ship is resting in davy jones locker.
I found you on POTN. As you can see I was not aboard your ship, but I believe she made a Med cruise in 67 or 68 as I remember hearing your ship's name at some point while we were in the Med.

Great website
My first ship was the Big "O". Barely 17 years old I grew up fast. I have many good and not so good memories there, I wouldn't trade any of them for they are who I am today. I was aboard the Oriskany during the Cuban Missile crisis I can't believe it was 50 years ago I reported aboard.
Hi to all. what a wonderful tool, My time aboard the Mighty O was truly a once in a lifetime experience. Looking to connect with friends of the 3rd div I have lost contact with, One is a man called Greg Casto, Last known state was Indiana. Anybody have a address phone please forward. Nice page set up. I still have the video of the sinking off the coast of Florida on my computer and each time I watch it I remember all the great men I had the honor to serve with.
Like to hear from any one that served in Supply dept with me
Great Site - Thanks
When I was ten years old, thanks to family friends attached to VA-163, my family and I went on the "Dependents Day Cruise" in '67'. It made a lasting impression on a ten year old boy.
Was aboard the "Mighty O" for the first strikes off Yankee Station in 1965. Flew as ECM Enlisted Aircrew in the old "Queen Spad" (A1E). Our squadron was also on board during the tragic fire. Great site and a wonderful tribute!
Came aboard in 1954 right out of boot camp. Took a training cruse up the coast from San Diego to San Francisco, water was rough and listing 15 deg at times. Sickist I ever was aboard ship. After training cruse was transferred to USS Shangrila (CVA 38). She was the first canted deck in the Pacific.
This is a great web site as well as all of the rest. Never had any idea all of this existed. Thanks to all who have worked so hard getting this out to the rest of us.Thank you very much.
I still think about my time on board and the friends I had and some I still have
